Bale's Batman does basically zero detective work in any of the movies, Alfred and Fox basically have to do his thinking for him multiple times, but it's not entirely his fault because The Joker literally operates outside of linear time and with omniscience about probabilities like most villains in the Nolanverse.

My headcanon is that he did this for no reason and The Joker had left obvious clues of where to meet for their showdown. Batman even showed up right when he was awaiting his cue from the ships.

In fact, many of the events in the movie make more sense if you assume that everyone but The Joker, and maybe Alfred/Fox, are complete idiots rather than the elite level people they're supposed to be. This applies even more so to TDKR.
