Hello friends. I try not to be a non-stop ball of despair about the current state of the games industry, but this week's Microsoft news has really gotten under my skin.

I feel as though the space for innovative, surprising and delightful games has just gotten that bit smaller. I'm tired of the non-stop carnival of layoffs and mealy-mouthed memos. I'm still smarting from the end of Roll7, a developer responsible for my honestly my favorite game of the past few years in Rollerdrome. I feel sad about Free Radical. I cannot COPE with the end of the studio that gave me Prey.

Yes, I'm old. But back around 2012 I felt like indies were the future, that maybe small studios making lower-budget but superexciting games had found a distribution model that worked. But the iOS/Google Play stores that seemed to make that stuff possible are now dreadful for discoverability. Free-to-play dominates. Everyone's hugging existing IP in the hope it'll keep them afloat. Acquisitions have been a disaster.

Really, this thread is a plea for anyone who cares about this art form to give me some reasons to be hopeful about the medium in general. Can great creators who aren't tied to massive dumb companies sustain this thing anymore? Is this just a blip? Have we been here before? Am I just Abe Simpson yelling at a cloud and clinging to an imagined past that never really existed?

Post great games really succeeding in spite of industry nonsense and interesting insights from developers and the like who have a better vision of how this could all shake out.

He has diminished the world courts, eroded the relevance of the geneva conventions, diminished the U.N. and American soft power in the world. His actions are accelerating new partnerships among nations that leave western countries out.

This is a middle east on the precipice of disaster for neocon types and glory for a part of the world that might take this opportunity to tell the U.S. and it's imperialist bullshit to fuck off and partner up with other countries instead because their populace hates America so much. Along with the generational damage done to Palestinians, generational damage has also been done to Israel. It is a real unknown what all of this yields in a few years when western journalists are finally allowed to get into Gaza see the horrors that this Genocide has wrought. This horrendous foreign policy will touch the U.S. it's not explicitly domestic policy but it will become very affecting eventually.

I don't think we can admit that at all. Capital is far more available now than it was in the past. Home loans and college loans have never been given out as easily as now, they're both massively subsidized by the government and have been for decades. Then you have the fed's low interest rates for all our lives.

A home, college and even food were lower in dollar value in the past but they were far more of your paycheck. You used to have to actually have capital to get loans too.

Our parents and grandparents didn't buy homes where people already lived, they created the suburbs and entire cities.

ehhhh...granted i don't know much beyond my own experience and those of friends but it definitely feels harder to get a house now. prices aren't dropping too much and interest is rising. there's definitely more down payment assistance programs which helps a lot but it's still a pain even with a steady job and good to great pay. and at least locally inventory isn't there and houses that are not really amazing are selling for $50-100k more than they would have been a year or two ago.

plus there are stats showing that home ownership is down among younger generations. so i don't think its "impossible" but i'm not gonna say its easier than it has been previously. but also i feel like if i can own a house, its possible for almost anyone

I listen to my younger colleagues on great wages talk about holidays, great extravagant experiences they're having, eating out and buying lots of cool and expensive stuff. I also listen to them complain that housing is unaffordable. 

Then I sit back in my nice house and think back to when I was their age on a much smaller wage and holding back on taking holidays, not enjoying extravagant things that I wanted, eating out rarely and buying a minimal amount of cool and expensive stuff and have NO FUCKING PITY WHATSOEVER!
