Please don't credit Federman's change to his stroke. I literally died a few times from strokes and my recovery only gave me more appreciation for people and deepened my empathy. I lurked here for years before posting, but found myself no longer wanting to do so pretty shortly after I started. In large part, it was because nearly every thread in the Gaming section was dominated by negativity, one-liners, sniping, and hot takes. Any in depth discussion felt like a waste, especially as it became apparent any attempts at providing insight (often from people in the industry) would just get buried and ignored most of the time. Even as someone who basically only reads, I have to make liberal use of the ignore function on threads and posters because it gets to be too much to wade through. It is an exhausting and depressing environment to post in and it just wasn't worth it for me.



Over the last few years of reading I've also seen many voices I used to pay attention to, especially from gender minorities, either dramatically cut back or completely stop posting as well. The reasons for this I'm sure are many, but I'd imagine the toxic vibe to the forum is a big part of it. It's just not fun to be here and deal with constant drive-bys from people looking to score points, or seeing your words and perspectives get drowned out by people treating the board like a Twitter timeline, all trying to farm the most engagement. When you combine that with the risks of posting here (i.e. bad actors using it as a way to target off-platform harassment) it's just not worth it.



I only really use ResetEra as a news feed now. I don't even know how you moderate this away, because it seems either by design or just a byproduct of the size of the forum and its culture. But that's just how it is and it's very clear it's not changing.

It's the grift. No two-ways about it. I've been through the whole negative news cycle of Pokémon since the GBA games were considered ugly compared to their peers, Gen 4 and Gen 5 getting hated over due to designs, Megas etc. All of those things brought criticism that's natural for a franchise like Pokémon.



But these days being extremely negative is very, very lucrative. Hating on anything can be a job now. You can make weekly videos shitting on current releases pretty consistently and Pokémon solves a big problem with engagement-baiting on the internet: you can do the whole hatemongering thing with Pokémon without entering in anti-Woke/DEI culture war bullshit.



And in the end, it's just Pokémon. Fans want better games and that's ok, but we know that in the grand scheme of things, there is no reason to start shitstorms over the most recent Pokémon release being just average. In 2006, this would just lead to maybe a flame war on Serebii.net forums, these days it's just some nasty business that somehow generates a lot of revenue.

I am going to say this once again: it would help immensely if you guys would actually make reports instead of just coming in here to complain about the posts. Seriously, tell us about them when they happen instead of just holding onto it like this.

More recently, at least, there have been reports - like on the Sad Dad Problem Playstation thread. I made one there that wasn't acted on, but there were numerous other reports that led to actions.



But it still leads to the general thought that it's a problem that can't be moderated away overnight. That thread was still a shitshow and the next time there's another thread like that, it will again probably be a shitshow because it's basically going to be playing whack-a-mole between the volume of dismissive platform warrior posts together with the reality that the thread will unfortunately already be circling the drain by the time staff gets an opportunity to review reports and take some action.



Though, conversely, to be fair, staff shouldn't feel like it's a wasted effort. If this is what the approach is going to be, it's just going to take time until enough people have posts actioned and either change their behavior or be actioned more severely.

We don't feel it's a wasted effort is the thing. I want to make this point: over the years we have gotten rid of a lot of really bad platform warriors. Hell, there's new ones that pop up and get permed almost instantly on an almost weekly basis.



We don't like the warriors. We don't like the Xbox warriors. We don't like the Nintendo warriors. We don't like the Sony warriors.



The thing is that there's tens of thousands of posts a day across hundreds of threads and we cannot possibly be in every single one. We need people to give us a heads up and point at the warriors and go, "Hey, this dude is being a warrior, toss them." The problem is that most people who come into this thread and complain aren't doing that. If you actually want to see these guys go then you need to help us out and report them. Hit the button, tell us the problem and why it's a problem. The more information we have the faster we can act.



I keep saying this, but some warrior nonsense is incredibly obvious but some of the smarter warriors have started disguising their nonsense (they don't do a very good job though which is why they keep getting banned), so reporting them and giving us as much context as you can does help.



Moderation isn't something we can do alone, you need to be willing to help us out and point out the problems otherwise you'll have to wait for one of us to wander into a thread and hopefully see the problem posts, which might take more than a 
minute.
