I'm fascinated by all the progressives who can at the drop of a hat rattle off a list of all the crimes against marginalized people in American history that makes the country unsalvageable and thus need to be burned to the ground insistent that things were better "back in the day" when straight cis white males could just beat anyone who spoke up against them or out of turn. It's the parents that force their kids to watch Ms. Reichel when they just want to watch Blippi that does me in.

That subway take about white weddings Is so strange. Her first argument is that white weddings have no tradition which just doesn't make any sense at all as the whole thing is a tradition. Her second argument is that white people spend too much on weddings and that's why they can't afford houses or whatever which is again absurd because white people are pretty tame when you compare it to the kind of stuff you see in China or India. Parents will start saving for the wedding the second their daughter is born, it's so expensive.
We truly reached the peak of someone wanting to complain about something and putting "white" in front of it as safety 6 users liked this post: Potato, benji, Chumbawumbafan69, Polident, killamajig, Alpacx

white people do spend too much on weddings, in fact just about everyone does, but especially indians, fuck me they are off their tits when it comes to spending money on weddings and there's a billion of them all waiting to blow a small town's year product on a stupid wedding

I like weddings because they’re a big party and a bunch of friends from around the world show up and you whisper to some of them “did he get a prenup this time?”

I may have asked this before, but can someone explain to me why you guys vote for positions like Railway Commissioner?
Surely a position line that would be best filled as a merit-based appointment? Or is it just a ceremonial role and the real work is done by others?
In the case of Texas it's because the Railroad Commission was once a superpowerful position. It was once considered more powerful than any other elected official in the state and could dictate to Senators. Despite the name it doesn't regulate railroads anymore, it's actually the board for the Texas oil/gas industry. Before the rise of the petrostates in the Middle East, the Texas Railroad Commission set the world's oil price.
The Progressive Era largely established "independent" boards like that but to avoid the attack that these were elitist and anti-democratic they made them largely elected bodies. Almost all of them are no longer elected though, they're mostly legacy positions. Generally if they're still being elected in 2026 then they, like the Texas Railroad Commission, have some significant history. Almost none of these kinds of things are merit-based appointed, they're all politically appointed and often have caps on how many of each party are allowed on them. Elected bodies can avoid that, for example, the Texas Railroad Commission would have been entirely Democrat from 1890 until the 1980's. 3 users liked this post: Potato, Boredfrom, Besticus Maximus
