Just from his tweets you could definitely see Stancil would be that annoying white cis male who keeps demanding to know how something contributes to the goal and when they're going to go out and do something instead of focusing on ORGANIZING and giving everyone titles in a carefully managed social hierarchy.

The classic piece on this is from 1972:

The detranstion case is funny because the doctors argue "She identified as trans at the time, so how could we have known?"

The counter argument is that they didn't ensure that she wasn't suffering from any mental illness that could also explain her feelings.

It basically calls out the whole "always affirm" mindset

This all comes off as so strategic.

Tucking The Matrix safely away at #20 gives them right-side-of-history points without summoning the kind of attention they'd have gotten if it were in the top 5.

Not to imply that The Matrix is better than Jeanne Dielman, 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles. But the list is kind of like "a list of movies by women, in no particular order" anyway.

https://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/id/eprint/16875/ wrote:The primary text of this thesis is Skyrim, a fantasy roleplaying game released in 2011 to huge commercial success and critical acclaim. Through this text, the project explores the intersection of medievalist fantasy, politics, and whiteness. It investigates the parallels between political medievalisms, playful medievalisms, and the ways in which medieval fantasy is used to reinvent or reaffirm white identities.

The Middle Ages, as a time period, an imagined geographic space, and an ideological concept, is often nostalgically recalled as a key element in Western nationalism and identity formation. Skyrim provides a major case study through which to interrogate the tropes of medieval fantasy in order to understand how the genre situates itself as a space of creativity and resistance, but in fact maintains conservative social values. Furthermore, it asks how players engage in identity play in medieval fantasy games, and to what extent Skyrim’s politics encourage discussion and reflection.

This thesis is highly interdisciplinary in its form and utilises multiple methodologies to explore the construction of the self and the other through medievalism in fantasy. Traditional humanities methods are combined with a survey of players’ narrative choices and modes of identification with characters and factions within Skyrim, as well as analysis of ‘gamer’-activism in popular politics.

Ultimately, although the games explored are established to be highly conservative in their modes of racial representation, the thesis finds that players are actively engaged in identity play. Although this is limited in many ways by game design—especially where medieval fantasy genre conventions are heeded—the potential for game worlds to destabilise racial boundaries and provide a space for identity play is acknowledged, opening up several avenues for further research in the fields of enquiry.

The maintenance of white privilege. The gamer community use ‘historical facts’ to legitimise this kind of literacy.” ~ Victoria Cooper

...

However forcefully players maintain their arguments, many gamers continue to map their identity, heritage, and ancestry onto these games. They claim to be apolitical, yet in the same breath, refuse to acknowledge the politics behind these games. According to Cooper, they subscribe to the popular idea of the Middle Ages as ‘gritty, white, male, and powerful’. They cling to the notion that women didn’t fight in the Middle Ages, fiercely stating this as ‘as fact’, and steadfastly refusing to allow women agency in warrior roles.

Unfortunately for gamers, the tide is turning and the inspection of their identities is happening whether they like it or not, and will continue to gain momentum. Games like Skyrim, and The Elder Scrolls are only the tip of the iceberg. What Gamergate tried to shut down, instead, opened a Pandora’s Box that can never be closed. Academics, like Cooper, will continue to challenge, examine and illustrate the ways these groups misappropriate medieval history.

Are people also this mad when Chinese people make games and movies about history or myths?  It honestly just comes off that they're mad that they're could be something popular in pop culture that isn't thoroughly diverse, so they just try to make it diverse anyway. Wouldn't a much more interesting response be to diversify the myths and fantasy we pick from? Wasn't that kind of a lesson from Black Panther?

Yeah Fortnite did something similar ages ago, and around February aka Black History Month. It can be ok.

I think if I have any criticism, it's the blobbing together of all civil rights movements as like...inherently overlapped or presumptively in common cause. Life ain't that flat.

I'd also argue that it leads directly to the kind of omnicause infighting currently being documented by Will Stancil (who you may know as the overt White Nationalist author of "It Do, In Fact, Be Like That")
