For me, it helps to know that there's a difference between "staying informed" and "being stuck in the 24 hour news and social media cycle."

I went through my phase where I truly felt that I needed to be fully absorbed in the "fast news media" ecosystem in order to stay informed. What I quickly learned is that divesting from 24 hour "newstainment" media, limiting my social media absorption, and valuing the slow absorption of thoughtful and qualified experts didn't result in me being less informed.

It unveiled those forms of content for being the cesspools that they are.

And, yes, sometimes that includes Era.

What? No, I disagree here. The internet has it's downsides, but everyone having transparent access to each other has vividly opened folks eyes' to the injustice, tyranny and oppression many live under. While also showing those folks how life can and could be much better, by showing them countries where while it isn't perfect, is much more progressive than what they may experience in their daily lives. That's something to aspire to.

I said this in the Bluesky thread but it's important to bring it here because the Marxist critique of capitalism is literally the same. "No ethical consumption under capitalism" is literally the same concept. Things posted on Era every day about capitalism (or mainstream culture) is the same argument. All of this is just typical fundamentalist Christianity (ala Calvinism) reframed. It's all a claim that a sick society full of sin "degenerates" our humanity with "decadent" trifles that lure us from the light of perfect morality and thus needs to be replaced with a proper order that allows for nothing else.

While I'm finding myself sympathetic to increasingly extreme forms of climate protest, it seems like this could have been done at a time that was extremely inconvenient without being quite so life threatening. There's not much recourse to lack of heat in winter, aside from burning shit- which is somewhat counterproductive to the stated goals.

1. It won't work because this isn't how economies work, you can't stave off "outright collapse", also 50 million barrels of oil is like three days of US consumption so it won't last until November even if it did work.
